Our key tasks
In accordance with the relevant legislation and orders submitted by parliament and the competent authorities:
- The SPIEZ LABORATORY gathers and develops the necessary technical expertise for comprehensive NBC protection and shares this expertise with both the civilian and military authorities.
- The SPIEZ LABORATORY operates the requisite laboratory facilities and instrumentation for comprehensive NBC protection; when an incident occurs, it provides not only the necessary research, development and testing capabilities, but also the capabilities to measure radioactivity and to detect radionuclides, chemical warfare agents and special pathogens.
- The SPIEZ LABORATORY assists the Swiss army with the development and training of its NBC defence troops.
- The SPIEZ LABORATORY and its partners - the NBC Centre Spiez and the Centre of NBC Expertise of the Swiss army – ensures the operational readiness of the resources required to manage an incident with a high NBC risk; these include highly trained personnel, measurement procedures and instruments, as well as instructions and technical information.
- The SPIEZ LABORATORY supports the national authorities with the implementation of arms control treaties, and assists international efforts on the non-proliferation and disarmament of NBC weapons.
- The SPIEZ LABORATORY participates in international missions.
