Activities of the Organic Chemistry branch
- Chemistry and synthesis involving toxic chemicals, chemical warfare agents (CWA) and related compounds: study of synthetic route to these products;
- Evaluation of new synthesis trends for the preparation of CWA;
- In charge of the Lab (Toxic Substances Laboratory) which is designed for synthesis of toxic chemicals and which is declared as “Other Schedule 1 Facility for Protective Purposes” to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), as well as of the requested Schedule 1 declarations and inspections;
- Storage and supply of all non-commercially available compounds needed for studies to various groups of SPIEZ LABORATORY and to the Swiss army;
- Delivery of reference chemicals to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) member States, as well as to the OPCW analytical laboratory in the Netherlands;
- Support of the Arms Control Service with the necessary technical skills for disarmament, arms controls, and the application of the CWC;
- Member of the Escort Team for the systematic OPCW inspections of the Swiss chemistry industry;
- Providing support for the formation of the trainee chemical laboratory technicians of SPIEZ LABORATORY in organic chemistry;
- Training of new OPCW inspectors during systematic OPCW Mock inspections of our Toxic Substances Laboratory to strengthen CWC industry verification regime;
- To support training in verification analysis for NBC military specialists;
- Support for international cooperation and assistance programme set out in the CWC by training young chemists in the field of the organic synthesis;
- Supervision of organic chemistry internship;
- Contribution to decision making, planning, management, training and maintenance of the NBC-response team of the DDPS for emergency management in the event of chemical terrorism.
