Expertise is the key to transparency, trust and comparability. Accreditation is thus also a confidence-building measure that makes it possible for authorities, industry and society to assess whether testing, calibration, inspection or certification agencies are capable of carrying out certain tasks with a high degree of reliability. In Switzerland accreditations are given on the basis of the Series EN 45000 standards that are identical with the standardisation series ISO/IEC 17000 of the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS).

Seven testing laboratories of the Spiez Laboratory have been accredited by the SAS:

STS 0019 Internationally recognised verification laboratory for the detection of chemical warfare agents and related compounds in all kinds of samples

  • Methods for processing samples and identifying chemical warfare agents as well as their precursors and degradation products
  • Examination of samples whether they contain chemical warfare agents or other toxic substances as national analytical laboratory on behalf of Confederation and cantonal authorities
  • Examination of samples secured by the task force team (DDPS EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM) in the case of suspected C-terror incidents and consultation of local task forces.
  • Training of NBC Defence Lab1 specialists of the Swiss Armed Forces in combat agent analytics

STS 0028 Testing laboratory to determine radionuclide concentrations

  • Determining radionuclide concentration in environmental samples and in samples of various types and origins.
  • Special federal laboratory for measuring radioactivity. Is also part of ALMERA- (Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity) and is nominated as Collaborating Center of the IAEA. and cooperates closely with UNEP (the United Nations Environment Programme)

STS 0036 Testing laboratory for synthetics and rubber and how synthetics, rubber and textiles respond when exposed to chemical warfare agents

  • Accredited testing laboratory for the analysis of polymers, (thermoplasts, thermoplastic elastomers, duromers and elastomers)
  • As special field, resiliency tests of synthetics, elastomers and textiles towards chemical warfare agents are offered
  • Consultations regarding use and application, damage investigations and quality assurance

STS 0054 Testing laboratory for the detection of biological agents

  • Analytics of special human pathogens and biological toxins that are also regarded as potential B agents
  • Specialist application of classic microbiological and biochemical methods as well as molecular biological diagnostics
  • Measuring teams: diagnostics of bacteria, analytics of biological toxins, medical biochemistry (cholinesterase measurement) and viral diagnostics
